Even though we’re in the warmer part of the year, it may be time to start thinking about your cold weather needs. If you intend to spend a lot of time using your custom outdoor kitchen, you will want to have a way to keep yourself and your guests warm. If you’re cooking over the grill that’s one thing, but a patio heater can create a warm zone where people can sit and enjoy the cooler weather without getting frostbite! Here’s what you need to know about patio heaters.

How Patio Heaters Work

Patio heaters are tall structures that are designed to produce heat and take the chill off of the air. It won’t keep an area at a particular temperature, but it will make a small zone around the heater warmer and more comfortable. Patio heaters work via either electricity or by burning fuel like natural gas or propane. They create radiant heat in all directions, but the heating radius will vary per model, ranging from as short as 3 feet to as large as 20 feet.

Sizes

There are three general sizes of patio heater:

  • Full size – These towers stand on their own and are the most powerful, producing more BTUs than other models.
  • Tabletop – As the name suggests, these fit on a table and heat an area about the size of a patio table.
  • Wall or ceiling mount – These vary in size and power, ranging from compact to industrial and can range from a few thousand to tens of thousands of BTUs.

Installation

Depending on the type of patio heater you want, you may need professional installation, especially if you have a larger unit with more power.
