Like cleaning your dishwasher, it might seem silly to have to clean your washing machine. After all, this appliance is supposed to make clothes clean, it shouldn’t have to be cleaned itself. However, to maintain efficiency and ensure it is cleaning your clothes to the best of its ability, washing machines need to be cleaned.
There are a variety of different elements that build up in your washing machine, including detergents, hard water minerals, and soils. They can also be a breeding ground of bacteria. More than likely, you won’t be able to see this build up, but you’ll be able to smell it.
The smell is the first indicator that you need to clean your machine. If you don’t want the appliance to get to that point, you’ll need to take steps to keep it maintained. Whether you’re getting rid of the smell or doing regular maintenance, below is the best way to clean your washing machine.
Top-Loading Machine
If you have a top-loading machine, you need to set it to the highest level with the hottest setting. Place four cups of white vinegar in the machine. Once the cycle starts, you’ll then want to pause it and let the vinegar water sit in the machine for an hour. When the hour passes, start the machine and let it continue the cycle.
Front-Loading Machine
On a front-loading washer, there is a rubber gasket in the front. This collects mildew, soap scum, and hair, so it will need to be cleaned before cleaning the rest of the machine. It can be sprayed with a combination of vinegar and water, then wiped down with a soft cloth.
Like the top-load washer, you’ll want to set the front-load appliance to the highest and hottest setting. You’ll place two cups of white vinegar into the detergent dispenser and let it run through a complete cycle. You can also run another cycle with half a cup baking soda in the detergent dispenser, wiping down the inside after the cycle is complete.
