At first read, that may sound absolutely ridiculous. After all, your dishwasher’s job is to use soap and hot water, right? That being said, dishwashers can develop their own brand of disarray, and it’s up to you to keep things running cleanly to ensure that your dishwasher is operating at its most efficient. Here are a few tips for keeping your dishwasher sparkling.

Run the Dishwasher

The first thing you need to do is to run a cycle on your dishwasher. In the interest of not wasting water, run a full load. After the cycle is done, empty out the dishwasher entirely, including removing the racks like the utensil basket.

Check the Spinning Arms

You’ll have to get up close and personal for this next step. On the spinning arms are many small holes that spray water. For maximum efficiency, these holes should be clear of gunk and debris. If necessary, use a toothpick to clear the holes.

Check the Drain

At the bottom of the dishwasher is a drain, and sometimes pieces of debris like stickers and jar labels can get stuck. Remove anything you find, especially food bits, because they can cause unwanted odors. Use an old toothbrush and a paste of baking soda and clean around the drain. Rinse well.

Clean the Seal

The seal around the dishwasher door can develop its own grime. Using vinegar or lemon juice, you can easily clean away the buildup that forms.

Clean Utensil Racks

Remove any debris or food from the utensil basket and let it soak in the sink overnight if necessary. Wipe them down and place them back in the dishwasher.
