Types of Dryers According to the Power Source

Dryers are one of the most important appliances to have in your home when it comes to taking care of your clothes. Before you begin shopping around, you need to know about the different connections available. While all dryers need some type of electricity to work, electric dryers depend on electricity as their primary source of power. A gas dryer, on the other hand, only depends on electricity to power the main computer and lights, but it gets its heat from gas.

Modern dryers are energy-efficient appliances and come with new settings and sensors that protect clothes from one-size-fits-all high heat. They can even render wrinkle-free clothes–no iron needed! Most are sold in stylish, contemporary, or colorful sets with resembling washing machines that are stacked or side-by-side. Here are two main types of clothes dryers you will find on the market:

Electric Dryer

Electric dryers depend on a 3-prong or 4-prong 240-volt outlet to make them work. While they are a little more expensive to operate than their gas counterpart, they are ideal for someone who wants a simple, low-maintenance solution for drying their clothes. It’s important to remember that these units use 2x the strength as that of a traditional household current.

Gas Dryer

Gas dryers are more expensive right from the start than an electric dryer. Over the course of time, you will save money on operating costs, making them more cost-effective in the end. It only takes a year or two to make up the difference in purchase price due to the money saved on your energy bill. They are powered through either natural gas or propane and require their own hook-up. If you don’t have a gas line already in existence where you want to install your new dryer, you should turn to a professional to hook it up for you.
