Defining the Style of Your Kitchen

Outdoor kitchen cabinets are great components for creating storage spaces. Just like indoor kitchen cabinets, they define the style and look of your outdoor kitchen. For that reason, it is paramount to choose the cabinets that fit your home and cooking needs.

Outdoor Cabinet Materials

Four types of materials are used to build outdoor kitchen cabinets:

  • Polymer
  • Stainless Steel
  • Wood
  • Masonry

High-Density Polyethylene

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a synthetic material that is stain-resistant and weather-resistant. Cabinets made out of this material are easy to clean. On the other hand, the range of colors is limited and does not have the same gorgeous look as wood. If your concern is durability, HDPE cabinets are the way to go.

Stainless Steel

Cabinets built out from stainless steel are very resistant to corrosion and staining. Another plus is that this material provides a uniform look to any space, as it matches many stainless steel kitchen appliances. However, stainless steel is hard to keep clean from fingerprints, bird droppings, and oils if not coated with a protective finish. Also, it gets very hot when exposed to direct sunlight. This type of cabinet is perfect for those looking for a luxury and professional look.

Wood

Common woods used for outdoor cabinets include cypress, ipe, and teak. For additional protection, some wood cabinets are also finished with oil or a water-seal treatment. One drawback is that wood tends to fade depending on the type of wood and finish treatment. Also, this material can ultimately break down over time. Wood cabinets are for those homeowners who preferred aesthetics over durability.

Masonry

Cabinets are constructed from cement blocks or a metal frame that is covered in a decorative brick, stucco, or stone veneer. Their weather resistance and the significant “built-in” look are two characteristics that appeal homeowners. Plus, they are highly customizable.

One disadvantage of this style of outdoor kitchen cabinets is that they are not easy to install as other cabinet types. Also, you must buy the exterior materials as well as the cabinets components separately from the primary structure of the cabinets.
